The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated in a ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was a popular tourist destination because of its glorious past. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures, modern tourism is also integrated into Jerusalem's city. "The inauguration [of] this tunnel is a further stage in the growth of Jerusalem as an ideal tourist destination for all types of travelers from Israel and around the globe."

The ministry of Elkin, which also headed the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year throughout Jerusalem's tourism, and also in the creation of new ventures and attractions that link the amazing historical time of our capital city with its future." I invite cyclists to enjoy an attractive, well-maintained cycle route, which overlooks the stunning scenery of Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million to the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.


Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the dream of altering the way of transport throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel that connects to Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing bicycle paths and those that will paved in the neighborhoods.  נווה פריצקי It's designed to encourage biking among the residents of Jerusalem and encourage the green movement in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line to the Sorek purification plant.

The works currently underway include road construction, the installation of blowers, as well as advanced security and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for people to walk through throughout the year.

The Kerem Tunnel allows for access to exclusive recreation areas like Ein Kerem, a neighborhood that includes a biblical zoo and aquarium as well as ancient natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
