The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was inaugurated as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.

The tunnel runs through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza path. The southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is just half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists were present at a celebration to inaugurate the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the improvement of Jerusalem's tourism in all its aspects and also in the development of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that link the rich history of our capital city's eternal past to its future... I encourage cyclists to visit and enjoy an up-to-date and well-maintained cycling route that takes in the unique nature of Old Jerusalem."

Elkin's Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million for the project. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is the central instrument for achieving the vision to alter the notion of transportation throughout Jerusalem," Elkin said. "The new tunnel, which is connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing cycle routes within the city, as well as those that will be paved within its various neighborhood.  נווה פריצקי It is designed to encourage bicycle riding within the city's residents and to promote the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the 1990s to move the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant located in Sorek The Sorek Tunnel is located to the west of the city. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel that also houses the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

Current projects include road construction, installation blowers, and advanced safety equipment to ensure the tunnel is secure for everyone to use throughout the year.

Kerem Tunnel Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreational areas, like Ein Kerem, a neighborhood that includes a biblical aquarium and zoo and also the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
