The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of an extensive cycle path that runs through the capital.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated in a ceremony on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Jerusalem was a sought-after tourist destination because of its rich and fascinating history.  נווה פריצקי Elkin said that apart from its historic treasures and modern amenities, tourism has also been included in the Jerusalem city. "The inauguration of this tunnel project [is] another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem. The tunnel makes Jerusalem an attractive destination for tourists of all types of audience within Israel and around the world."

Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism in all its aspects and also in the development of innovative activities and ventures that connect the glorious historical past of our eternal capital to the future of Jerusalem... I invite cycling enthusiasts to join us and take a ride along the modern and well-maintained cycle route that offers a view of the unique scenery of Old Jerusalem."

Elkin's Ministry Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.



Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an crucial tool to realize the idea to transform the idea of transport throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths in the city and will be constructed within the different neighborhood. The tunnel is intended to encourage bicycling within its inhabitants, and promote the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move its main sewer line towards Sorek's purification plant.

Road construction and installation, as well as blowers, sophisticated safety systems and electrical wiring are all part and parcel of the present work. The tunnel will be safe for the people to use all year.

It is also possible to use the Kerem Tunnel to enjoy unique recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem, the Biblical aquarium, zoo and Ein Kerem neighborhood.
